UTEP Reignites Rivalry with Former CUSA Foe UTSA

UTEP women's basketball (4-4) heads to San Antonio Sunday to take on former CUSA member UTSA (4-3). Tipoff is slated for 11 a.m. MT/ 12 p.m. CT.

PREVIOUSLY ON…
The Miners fell to undefeated Colorado State 66-59 Thursday at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners led by as many as 13, but sharp shooting from the three-point line by the Rams (14 made threes) pushed them over the edge. Mahri Petree led UTEP with 21 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jane Asinde posted 12 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four steals. Delma Zita tallied 11 points and Adhel Tac had nine in the contest.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE QUEEN
Jane Asinde recorded her fourth double-double (12 points, 14 rebounds) of the season against Colorado State. She ranks first in CUSA and ninth in the country in double-doubles. That brings her career total to 44, including 24 at the Division I level.
 
MOMENTOUS MAHRI
Mahri Petree rose to the occasion against the Rams, leading the Miners with 21 points. She was four points shy of a career high. She shot 56.3 percent (9-16) from the field and drained two threes.
 
IN THE RANKS
Three Miners are currently putting up numbers that land them in the national rankings. Jane Asinde ranks first in conference and 20th in the nation in rebounds per game (10.4), Erin Wilson rates second in CUSA and 12th in the country in offensive rebounds per game (4.5), and Delma Zita sits third in the league and 102nd nationally in assists (30), to name some notables.

Adhel Tac is finding her stride, following a career night against North Alabama with a nine-point, six rebound outing against the Rams.
 
RIPPING DOWN THE REBOUNDS
The Miners crushed the Rams on the boards, grabbing 43 to their 24. They outrebounded CSU 14-2 on the offensive glass and 29-22 on the defensive side.
 
SCOUTING UTSA
The Roadrunners are 4-3 on the year, averaging 61.0 points and 46.4 rebounds per game. UTSA is shooting 38.9 percent from the floor, 25.3 percent from three, and 60.7 percent from the foul line. The team currently ranks sixth in the nation in blocks per game (6.7), 13th in rebounds per game (46.4), 21st nationally in defensive rebounds per game (30.9), and 28th in the NCAA in offensive rebounds per game (15.6). They also sit 39th in the country in field goal percentage defense (34.6), 67th in free throw attempts per game (20.7), and 82nd in three-point percentage defense (27.1). The Roadrunners are led by Sydney Love, averaging 13.0 points per game, with Kyra White following closely at 11.1, and Elyssa Coleman sitting at 8.4. Love is ranked second in the American Athletic Conference and 59th nationally in free throw percentage (87.9. 29-33) and eighth in the league, 73rd in the country in free throws (29). Idara Udo paces the team in rebounds (6.9), followed by Coleman at 6.3 and Maya Linton at 6.0 even. White leads the AAC and is 26th nationally in minutes per game (36.4). She also sits fifth in conference, 81st NCAA in blocks (10). Coleman and Udo are also ranked in blocks, placing first in the league and 21st in the country with 16 blocks, and third in the AAC and 49th in the nation with 12 blocks, respectively.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE ROADRUNNERS
UTEP is 20-24 all-time against UTSA. The last matchup between the two sides took places in the 2022-23 season and saw the Miners win 79-52 on 2/11/23 under former UTEP head coach Kevin Baker.
