Burgher Tops Own School Record on First Day at Don Kirby Friday Evening

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Niesha Burgher clocked in a new program-record 23.17 in the 200-meter dash, topping her own school achievement as the UTEP track and field team completed day one at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational hosted by New Mexico in the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday.

Burgher has been impressive in her first season with the Miners, setting the school record in the women's indoor 200m at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational with a time of 23.20 on Jan. 21. The record was previously held by UTEP great Tobi Amusan (23.35 – 2017).

The native of Jamaica finished fourth in Friday evening's race behind Oregon's Jadyn Mays (22.86), Mia Brahe-Pedersen (unattached – 22.89) and Florida State's Dajaz Defrand (22.93).

Burgher, a transfer from Western Texas College, ranked no. 1 in Conference USA in the 200m, 60m (7.31) and the 4x400m relay team (3:41.40) heading into this weekend's competition.

Oghenekaro Brume clocked in a personal-best 24.08 in the 200-meter dash unseeded race. She topped her previous best of 24.46 from last year's Don Kirby. Brume's time would rank in top half of C-USA.

Abdulraof Rashid clocked in a 21.58 in the men's 200-meter dash. Rashid currently ranks eighth in C-USA with a 21.54@ (converted from a 21.47 for altitude).

Titus Cheruiyot placed second in the 3000-meter run, clocking in an 8:24.97.

Saturday's field events will commence at 8:30 a.m., while the track events will shoot off at 9:30 a.m. with the women's 60-meter hurdles. The Don Kirby will conclude at 3 p.m. with the women's 4x400-meter relay in which the Miners ranks no. 1.
