UTEP Women’s 4x100 Clocks in 44.05, Second Best in Program History as Miners Conclude Regular Season at Desert Heat Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – The UTEP women's 4x100-meter relay team sprinted out to the second-best performance in program history with a 44.05, and multiple Miners set personal bests to wrap up the regular season at the Desert Heat Classic hosted by the University of Arizona at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson on Saturday. 

"It was very hot day in Tucson today. We played this one little on the safe side due to conference championships in two weeks," UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. "We had multiple personal bests and other good performances. Plus, nobody got hurt, so I was pleased with the outcome. Less is more what comes to practice during the next ten days and everyone's focus are finals for the semester during that timeframe."
 
Saturday's meet was a final tune up before the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships starting May 11 in Denton.  
 
The women's 4x100 team composed of Zani Meaders, Niesha Burgher, Denae McFarlane, and Oghenekaro Brume clocked in a C-USA-best 44.05. The previous best was 44.31, which ranked tied second with the 2010 squad on the program's all-time list. 
 
Jakub Belik leaped to a personal-best 2.15 meters (7-0.5) and is tied for first in C-USA with Rice's Amata Ese. Belik's mark ranks tied 24th nationally. His previous best was 2.12m (6-11.5). 
 
Victor Kibiego raced out to a personal-best 3:44.68 in the 1500-meter event, and finished second out of 28 competitors. Kibiego moved from 15th (3:54.94 – previous best) to second place in C-USA. 
 
Marisa Simpson sprinted out to a personal-best 13.45 in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Simpson's time ranks first in C-USA. Her previous best was 13.49. 
 
Yusuf Mohamud raced out to a personal-best 1:50.27 in the men's 800-meter race. He time ranks second in C-USA. Mohamud's previous best was 1:50.46.
 
Joshua Hill clocked in a personal-best 46.66 in the men's 400-meter dash, ranking second in C-USA. His previous best was 47.31. 
 
Ruth Jerubet competed in her first career 3000-meter steeple chase, coming in second with a time of 11:10.23. Her time would rank outside the top five in C-USA. 
 
Carshaylah Harrison clocked in a personal-best 59.70 in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing eighth out of 26 competitors. She ranks third in C-USA. Harrison finally broke the minute mark after her previous best was a 1:00.32. 
 
C-USA leader Arianne Morais tossed 53.82 meters (176-7), placing second in the javelin. She's fourth nationally and the current leader in C-USA with a 57.38m (188-3).
 
Denae McFarlane clocked in a personal-best 23.68 in the 200-meter dash, finishing in ninth out of 48 runners. Her previous best was 23.91. Her new time ranks just outside the top five in C-USA.
 
C-USA Loubna Benhadja had a 58.48 in the 400m hurdles, finishing fifth out of 26 runners. Benhadja ranks second in conference with a 58.23. 
 
Abdulraof Rashid clocked in a personal-best 21.15 in the 200-meter dash. He ranks ninth in C-USA.

TAKING THEIR NEXT MARK
The Miners will compete at the 2023 Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by North Texas in Denton at UNT Track & Field Stadium on May 11-14 (Thurs.-Sun.).
