Former UTEP Quarterback, Award-Winning Screen and Game Writer Pat Hegarty to Headline UTEP Football Kickoff Luncheon on July 26

EL PASO, Texas – Pat Hegarty, quarterback of the record-setting 1988 UTEP football team and an award-winning screen and game writer, will be the guest speaker at the 2023 UTEP Football Kickoff Luncheon on Wednesday, July 26 at noon at the El Paso Convention Center. 
 
Head Coach Dana Dimel and members of the Miner football team will also be on hand to preview the 2023 season. 
 
The 1988 Miner football team, which finished 10-3 led by Hegarty, will be inducted into the UTEP Athletics Hall of Fame and honored at UTEP's home opener versus UIW on Sept. 2. 
 
Hegarty's action-drama screenplay, Flower of Fire, won the Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition, and his action thriller screenplay S.T.E.A.L. was named to The Hit List as one of the best spec screenplays in Hollywood as voted on by major development executives, including Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions, Brad Pitt's Plan B, and J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot.  Hegarty also penned the video game scripts for such titles as Ghostbusters, Cars, Spiderwick Chronicles, Ratatouille, Eragon and many more.

The 2023 Miners return a three-year starter at quarterback (Gavin Hardison), a seasoned offensive line, a bruising ground game led by El Paso's own Deion Hankins and newcomer Mike Franklin, and a defense anchored by Praise Amaewhule, Kobe Hylton and Tyrice Knight. 
 
About Pat Hegarty 
Pat Hegarty was the 1987 WAC Newcomer of the Year and a first-team Academic All-American for UTEP in 1988, leading the Miners to the best record (10-3) in school history, and a berth in the Independence Bowl.  He earned a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the prestigious National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholarship.  He was a backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos for two years, including the 1989 AFC Championship team led by John Elway. 
   
Hegarty is also the author of a literary novel entitled The Dazzle of the Light(Wexford College Press, 2003), and co-author of War Room to BoardRoom: Leadership Lessons from West Point's Warrior Class (Fulton Books, 2021). 
  
Hegarty earned his Master of Arts in Literature from the University of Colorado, and holds dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland.  He currently lives in Western New York with his wife and two children.
