EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP soccer program (1-9-1) lost 2-0 to NM State Thursday behind goals from Megan Ormson and Tati Jerman. The game featured the biggest crowd (832) at a Miner soccer game since 8/19/16 against NM State.
Â
"Tonight was really a great display of what El Paso can do for our team, and unfortunately we need to do more for El Paso." Head Coach
Gibbs Keeton said. "The fans showing up in full force, with student-athletes, friends, family, everybody that came out tonight created an immense home field environment, which is what we have been asking for. I applaud El Paso and all those that came out and supported to have a sellout tonight, it's something we wanted our athletic department to get behind and achieve and we did that, and now we really have to do our job on the field. I think that tonight we showed in the first half what we are capable of, but we also have to mend our weaknesses and the time is now, the time is fleeting, and we are so appreciative to play at University Field and to have such a great rivalry game. It's important for our student-athletes."
Â
The Aggies got on the board early, with Ormson scoring off a Bianca Chacon corner three minutes into the game. After that, the Orange and Blue went on the offensive, with shots from
Emerson Kidd and
Nicole Morales forcing saves from NM State keeper Valerie Guha in the fourth and 23rd minutes, respectively. UTEP had a chance with a corner in the 24th, but it was successfully blocked by the Aggie defense.
Â
The Miner defense held strong against three corner kicks and a shot from NM State between the 32nd and 38th minute.
Olivia Roskos responded with a try of her own that went just over the bar in the 39th. Lauren Machuca posted one more shot for the Aggies before the half, but it went far wide.
Â
The rivalry got heated in the second half, with a combined six yellow cards being handed out. Gianna Valenti had two shots in the 59th and 60th minute, but
Tionna Taylor snagged the save on the first and the second flew wide. NM State found its insurance goal in the 72nd minute from Jerman. Shila Rasoul had the last shot of the game for either side, but it was blocked well by the UTEP defense.
Â
The Miners head to Ruston, La., Sunday to face LA Tech at 12 p.m. MT/ 1 p.m. CT. Following that the team returns home for two against Jax State (10/1) and WKU (10/7).
