EL PASO, Texas – UTEP will celebrate the anniversaries of two legendary UTEP basketball teams, as well as honor Miner icons Stefon Jackson, Mike Maddux and Omar Thomas during Saturday men's basketball home games during the months of January and February.
The 2003-04 team will return for its 20
thanniversary at the Feb. 3 game versus Liberty, while the 1983-84 squad will be honored on its 40
th anniversary at the Feb. 24 game against Sam Houston.
Mike Maddux, UTEP alum and pitching coach for the 2023 World Champion Texas Rangers, will be recognized at the game versus WKU on Jan. 20.
Meanwhile, the popular "Miner Legends" program returns, as UTEP's all-time leading scorer, Stefon Jackson, will have his jersey honored at the game versus NM State on Feb. 10. The Miners will also pay tribute to the leading scorer on their 2003-04 NCAA Tournament team, Omar Thomas, at the Liberty game on Feb. 3.

Mike Maddux Recognition
UTEP welcomes back Mike Maddux to the Sun City. Maddux was a member of the Miner baseball team from 1980-82 before enjoying a 15-year career in the big leagues. Later, he developed a reputation as one of the top pitching coaches in major league baseball. Maddux is the pitching coach for the 2023 World Champion Texas Rangers.

2003-04 Team 20th Anniversary Reunion; Omar Thomas Honored Jersey
The 2003-04 UTEP men's basketball team returns to El Paso for a 20th anniversary celebration! Coming off a 6-24 season, the Miners tied the NCAA record for turnaround, finishing 24-8 and earning an at-large bid to the "Big Dance" under coach Billy Gillispie. UTEP tied for the Western Athletic Conference regular season title led by Omar Thomas (15.5 points per game), Jason Williams (11.6 ppg), Filiberto Rivera (11.2 ppg) and John Tofi (10.8 ppg). Thomas, who currently coaches at Socorro High School, will also be honored at the game.

UTEP vs. NM State (7 pm)
Stefon Jackson Honored Jersey
UTEP honors all-time leading scorer Stefon Jackson by raising his jersey to the Haskins Center rafters. Jackson scored 2,456 points in four seasons with the Miners (2005-09). He is also the UTEP career leader for 20-point games (68) and rates second in school annals with 15 games scoring 30+ points. He led the nation in free throws made (312) and attempted (374) during the 2008-09 season. Jackson is the no. 3 scorer in Conference USA history.

UTEP vs. Sam Houston (7 pm)
1983-84 Team 40th Anniversary Reunion
One of coach Don Haskins's best teams, the 1983-84 Miners make their way back to El Paso for a 40th anniversary celebration. UTEP opened the season with 15 consecutive victories and rose to as high as fifth in the nation, before finishing 27-4 and ranked no. 9 by the Associated Press. The Miners were 21-0 at home. UTEP finished 13-3 in WAC play in the midst of a run to five consecutive league titles. The Miners' top scorers were Fred Reynolds (13.9 ppg), Luster Goodwin (10.5 ppg), Kent Lockhart (9.0 ppg) and Kevin Hamilton (8.6 ppg).
