1/5/2024 10:44:00 AM

EL PASO – UTEP Football Head Coach Scotty Walden named Steven Curtis the Miners' nutritionist on Friday.

Curtis served as Austin Peay's director of sports nutrition during the 2023 season. While a Governor, Curtis oversaw the fueling, hydration and recovery needs for 16 Division I sports teams.

"We hired Steven Curtis from Vanderbilt at Austin Peay, and he was a pivotal hire for our players during our championship run," Walden said. "Steven has extensive knowledge on how to help guys gain, lose and even maintain weight. We are fully committed to the nutrition component for our players, and Steven leads this daily. He checks their plates at meals and ensures our guys are educated on what they should be eating and drinking. He has a vast knowledge of nutrition but what separates him is his love and passion for seeing our players succeed. We are fortunate to have Steven on board with us here in El Paso!"

Curtis worked in a unique situation where he served as the Governors' director of sports nutrition, while also working with the Vanderbilt football program as a sports nutrition assistant during the 2023 football season. Curtis went on road trips while with the Austin Peay football program. The Governors finished 9-3 overall and 6-0 in United Athletic Conference play, while claiming a UAC Championship and FCS playoff berth in 2023.

Curtis started his career at his alma mater Tennessee Tech as a sports nutrition/strength and conditioning graduate assistant during the 2021-22 athletic season.

Curtis received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Tennessee Technological University in May 2017. He followed with a Master of Business Administration from Lincoln Memorial University in May 2020, and a Master of Science in Community Health and Nutrition from Tennessee Technological University in May 2023.
