EL PASO, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (4-7-3, 1-4-1 CUSA) battled through a lightning delay and pouring rain to upend LA Tech (2-8-5, 0-5-2) 2-1 at University Field Saturday evening.

After going down a goal six minutes into the second half, the Miners didn't lose focus, scoring two unanswered goals to complete the comeback. Ana Quintero scored her fifth goal of the year while Mina Rodriguez put in her first of 2024. Tionna Taylor made two saves in net.

UTEP held the all-around statistical advantage in shots (19-9), shots on goal (6-3), and corner kicks (10-3). 11 Miners registered shots against LA Tech, led by Quintero and Rodriguez with four apiece

"I think that this team hasn't reached its full potential, and that's part of being able to respond to the adversity of the game," Head Coach Gibbs Keeton said. "Some confidence has probably come from a bit of that adversity; we've been getting scored on in the last three minutes and haven't had a chance to really show out after that. But we are up for the challenge if we give up a goal to really improve our game and I'm proud of them tonight for being able to do that."

The first saw no goals for either side, with the Miners holding a narrow lead in shots (6-4). Hayden McMillan nearly got the Miners started early, blowing past a defender and forcing a save from Bulldog keeper Cadence Rutledge in the 15th minute. Later in the period Rodriguez tallied her first of three shots on goal, but Rutledge was once again up to the challenge.

Taylor was tested at the 30-minute mark, deftly recovering a shot from Caroline Martin. Both UTEP and LA Tech both had tries late into the half, but none found the back of the net.

The Orange and Blue turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, posting 13 shots (four on goal) to the Bulldogs' five (two on goal).

The visitors got on the board first when Kalli Matlock's shot just skipped past Taylor in the 51st minute. Tal Faingezicht picked up the assist on the goal.

The Miners kept pushing for the equalizer and found it in the 66th minute when Quintero stole the ball from Rutledge in the box and blasted it into the open net.

With less than 10 minutes to go in the match, both Ally Stickney and Rodriguez had good shots on goal but were saved by Rutledge.

A hard foul from the Bulldogs in the 87th minute gave UTEP a free kick right at the corner of the 18-yard box. Rodriguez made no mistakes with it and buried a low hard shot to the opposite corner.

LA Tech had a last-ditch try in the 89th minute, but Taylor was able to keep it out, and the victory went to the Miners.

UTEP is back on the road next Thursday (10/24) for the rescheduled matchup at FIU, with kickoff set for 9 a.m. MT/ 11 a.m. ET.

The next chance to catch the Miners at University Field is Sunday, Oct. 27, when they welcome Sam Houston to the Borderland for the final regular-season home game of 2024.

"The potential of this team is also related to the culture of this team, and we haven't even begun scratch the surface of what we are able to do. And we are really seeking the improvements of the culture to help us continue to win games in the last three minutes. I think we see that we are tough and that we are capable," Keeton said.
