UTEP Women’s Hoops Travels to FIU Thursday

EL PASO, Texas –
UTEP women's basketball (11-17, 6-9 CUSA) heads to Miami, Fla., to take on FIU (19-9, 10-4 CUSA) in the final game of the 2023-24 regular season. The Miners and Panthers are slated for a 5:00 pm MT/ 7:00 pm ET tip.

PREVIOUSLY ON
UTEP fell to Liberty 80-63 last Saturday. The Miners are now 11-17 on the year and 6-9 in CUSA. UTEP had a hot start to the contest, leading 21-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Flames got increasingly better over the next three, however, which allowed them to run away with the victory. Rebounding and second chance points were the biggest difference makers in the game, with Liberty outrebounding UTEP 52-23, including 19-5 on offensive boards, and outscoring the Miners 20-5 on second-chance points. Jane Asinde paced the Miners with 18 points and nine rebounds, followed by Luisa Vydrova with 15 and Erin Wilson with 12.
 
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Jane Asinde led UTEP with 18 points and nine boards against Liberty. It was the 15th time this season that she has topped the team in scoring and the 16th that she has led off the glass.
 
LIVELY LUISA
Luisa Vydrova posted a career-best 15 points on 50.0 percent (7-14) shooting against Liberty It is her third straight game with 10+ points, and fifth of the season.
 
SPLASH ZONE
Ivane Tensaie has shot 47.1 percent (16-34) from long distance over the last six games.
 
MS. CONSISTENCY
Erin Wilson tallied her 20th double-digit scoring effort of the season against Liberty (12 points). She has led the Miners in scoring on three of those occasions.
 
FEELIN' FINE AT THE FOUL LINE
UTEP is averaging 19.8 free throw attempts per game this season. That is good enough for third in conference and 42nd in the nation.
 
IRON WOMAN
Erin Wilson is the only Miner to start all 28 games this season.
 
CRASHING THE BOARDS
UTEP has tied or outrebounded opponents 18 times this season. The Miners have also recorded 40 or more rebounds on nine occasions.
 
DEFENSIVE HUSTLE
Jane Asinde leads CUSA and ranks 30th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (6.9).
 
IN THE RANKS
Two Miners are putting up numbers that place them in the top 100 nationally. Jane Asinde leads CUSA in three categories, free throw attempts (186 - 12th), free throws (130-26th), and defensive rebounds per game (6.9 - 30th). She also sits second in double doubles (11-44th), and rebounds (248 - 61st), and third in rebounds per game (9.2 - 51st). Erin Wilson sits fifth in CUSA in rebounds per game (8.1 - 95th).
 
SCOUTING FIU
FIU is 19-9 on the season and 10-4 in CUSA, which places the Panthers second in the league behind Middle Tennessee. They are averaging 69.3 points and 39.9 rebounds per game. FIU leads conference in two categories, bench points per game (25.4 - 24th NCAA) and rebounds per game (39.9 - 54th). The team sits second in a further six categories, free throw attempts per game (20.0 - 37th), free throws made per game (14.07 - 49th), rebound margin (4.8 - 65th), offensive rebounds per game (13.5 - 53rd), steals per game (8.8 - 90th), and winning percentage (67.9 - 75th). Finally, the Panthers rank third in CUSA in two categories, defensive rebounds per game (26.5 - 92nd) and turnovers forced per game (18.57 - 57th). Mya Kone paces the team in points (11.4) rebounds (8.1), and blocks (1.1). Ajae Yoakum (10.4), Tanajah Hayes (10.3), Kaliah Henderson (9.3) and Courteney Prenger (9.0) round out the top five scorers. Yoakum sits second on the team in rebounds (5.6). Hayes tops the Panthers in both steals (2.1) and assists (3.8). Her 2.1 steals per game leads CUSA and ranks 91st in the country. Kone's 8.1 rebounds per game places her fifth in conference and 95th nationally.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE PANTHERS
UTEP is 12-5 all-time against FIU. Earlier this season, the Miners fell to the Panthers 83-62 at home on 1/13/24. The last time UTEP beat FIU was an 83-79 win on 2/23/23 in El Paso. The last road win for the Miners was a 73-57 victory on 2/13/21.
