HOUSTON, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (1-1-2) tied Houston Christian (1-3-1) 1-1 on the road Saturday evening. Ashlyn Neireiter put in the goal for the Miners off an assist from Mina Rodriguez.

UTEP tied its season high in total shots (14) and tallied seven shots on goal in the match while holding HCU to four total shots (two on goal).

"As a team we want to be better in the air and we also understand the significance of set pieces," Head Coach Gibbs Keeton said. "We discuss how important they are quite often but inevitably it just comes down to attitude and desire. Ashlyn and others have that attitude."

The Miners nearly got on the board in the first minute of the game, with Rodriguez firing a shot to the right corner and forcing a diving save from Huskies keeper Emmy McKeon. Minutes later, Sheyliene Patolo had a try of her own from just outside the 18-yard box, but McKeon was up to the task on that one as well.

In the 11th minute UTEP thought it had its opener when Neireiter headed in a free kick taken by Rodriguez, but it was called back as offside.

Angelina Amparano made her lone save of the match in the 21st minute off an Emily Jaimes shot. Taya Lopez and Marina Hill both fired off shots for the Miners later in the half, but they missed wide and were saved by McKeon.

UTEP held the edge in total shots (4-2) and shots on goal (3-1) in the first half. Both sides recorded one corner apiece, and HCU was called for one more foul than the Miners (3-2).

The second half started with a furious pace, with Kaila Hudson, Hayden McMillan, and Ally Stickney all tallying shots in the opening 12 minutes of the period. HCU's Katie Marker also got off a shot of her own in the 49th minute.

In a moment that brought about feelings of déjà vu, Neireiter broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a goal headed in off another Rodriguez set piece, this time a corner. It marks Neireiter's first goal contribution of the 2024 campaign and second career score. The assist was Rodriguez's of the year.

The Miners continued their barrage of shots over the next 10 minutes, with Ana Quintero, Rodriguez, and Lopez all getting in on the action.

The Huskies found the equalizer in the 69th minute when Jaimes launched a ball from way out and it sailed in over Amparano's head.

UTEP would have three more shots (Quintero, Hudson, Stickney) in the latter part of the second half, as well as a last-minute corner kick, but none were able to find the back of the net and the game ended even.

"Our attacking connectivity has improved every game, and we will continue to look at enhancing our creation-zone play.  We had a lot of attacking variability, with seven shots on goal and plenty of box entries. I believe in our attacking group, and we will all put the work in that we need to improve," Keeton said.
