SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (2-3-2) was upended by UIW (2-3-2) 1-0 Thursday evening in San Antonio. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals took the lead just eight minutes into the second period, and the Miners could not find an equalizer.

UTEP outshot UIW 14-7, though the sides were tied 3-3 in shots on goal. The Miners had seven corner kick opportunities to the Cardinals three. Angelina Amparano made two saves in net.

"We need to play with an extra gear all the time whether that's on the road or at home," Head Coach Gibbs Keeton said. "That's what it's going to take for us to be successful and we have to find it."

Leslie Gutierrez got things going for the Miners in the ninth minute, hitting a shot low to the center of the goal, which was promptly scooped up by UIW keeper Erica Defferding. Just a minute later Amparano was tested in net with a shot from Meredith Caviglia. She was up to the challenge again in the 14th minute, calmly saving a shot from Sierra Wannamaker.

Eve Barry, Ashlyn Neireiter, and Ally Stickney also got in on the offensive action, with Neireiter forcing a save from Defferding in the 43rd minute.

The best chance for the Miners came in the 30th minute when Ana Quintero crossed a ball right in front of the UIW net, but a miss-hit from Nicole Morales sent the shot over the crossbar.

The first half saw an even stat line between the two sides, with both tallying five shots, two shots on goal, and three fouls against. The Miners held a slight advantage in corners (4-2).

The Cardinals broke the tie in the 53rd minute when Alex Knutson lofted a ball over Amparano into the top right corner of the net.

UTEP posted nine shots in the second half, but only Taya Lopez hit one on frame, forcing a diving save from Defferding in the 57th minute.

The Miners continue their away trip Sunday at Texas Southern, with kick off set for 5:30 pm MT/ 6:30 pm CT

The next chance to catch UTEP at home is Thursday, Sept. 26, when they welcome Middle Tennessee to University Field in their Conference USA home opener.
