HOUSTON, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (3-3-2) earned a 1-0 win over Texas Southern (1-7) Sunday evening.

It was a game of firsts, as Leslie Gutierrez scored her first career UTEP goal and the Miners recorded their initial road win since Head Coach Gibbs Keeton took charge of the program.

UTEP held a narrow advantage over TSU in total shots (12-11) and corner kicks (2-0), but the Tigers tallied one more shot on goal in the contest (7-6). Gutierrez and Sheyliene Patolo paced the Miners with three shots apiece.

Angelina Amparano made six saves in net on the way to her third solo shutout of the season. Earlier this year she was also part of a combined shutout with Tionna Taylor in the win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

"Our team is improving each game and tonight all it took was one goal to help lead us to victory. We will constantly be asking more of our team as we know they still have a lot to take from the game," Keeton said. "The goal came at a pivotal time in the match, and we are thrilled to have a senior step up and score.  Most importantly, it required the full team to get the road win. I'm proud of our group tonight and we look forward to opening conference USA play next week."

The game got off to a furious pace, with the squads firing off five shots between them in the first 10 minutes of the game. Gutierrez tallied her first of the night in just the third minute of play, but it flew over the crossbar.

Taya Lopez and Gutierrez each recorded shots on goal in the seventh minute, but Tiger keeper Alessandra Bastidas saved both. Eve Barry hit one of her own later in the 17th minute, but it missed wide to the left.

In the 20th minute TSU committed a foul in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick for the Miners. Gutierrez stepped up and buried it.

Following the goal, Patolo registered three tries in less than 10 minutes, with one shot being blocked, one missing high, and one being smothered by Bastidas. Marina Hill and Cassie Garza would also record shots as the first half expired, but neither was on target.

Ashlee Mora posted a shot in the 61st minute, but Bastidas managed to get her hands on it. Three minutes later Lopez would force another save from Bastidas.

The hosts turned up the pressure in the second half, piling up eight total shots in the period, but the Miner defense was once again up to the task and kept the clean sheet. Amparano made five of six saves in the second half.

Up next for the Miners is the Conference USA opener at first-year conference foe Kennesaw State on Thursday (9/19). Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MT/ 7 p.m. ET.

Then, UTEP is back at University Field Sept. 26 to take on Middle Tennessee in its CUSA home opener.
