KENNESAW, Georgia –
The UTEP soccer team (3-3-3, 0-0-1 CUSA) tied Kennesaw State (0-6-2, 0-0-1 CUSA) 1-1 Thursday evening in Georgia. Ana Quintero scored her fourth goal of the season in the draw.

The Miners recorded more than triple the number of shots the Owls did (21-5) including 7-1 in shots on goal. The team also outpaced KSU 8-2 on corner kicks.

The 21 shots and eight corners are both season highs for UTEP. Furthermore, it marks the first time that the Orange and Blue have tallied 20 or more shots in a contest since 2019, when the team did so three times.

"Today was tough for our players to not secure 3 points on the road after a dominating attacking performance in the 2nd half," head coach Gibbs Keeton said. "It's our responsibility to put ourselves in positions to score and to do so in a variety of ways, and we did that tonight. We look forward to returning to University Field and playing in front of our fans for our conference home opener."

The Miners put the Owls under pressure in the first half, tallying nine total shots (two on goal) over the first 45. Leslie Gutierrez got things started in the fifth minute, but her shot fell off target.

Sheyliene Patolo and Hayden McMillan also registered shots in the first 20 minutes, but neither was able to hit the mark.

The hosts got on the board first in the 20th minute when Macie Rainwater put in the rebound after Angelina Amparano stopped Aly Bryan's initial attempt off a corner.

Kaila Hudson forced a save from Owl keeper Caroline Wehr just a minute later, and Ally Stickney and Sydney Williams also had shots that missed for UTEP.

In the 37th and 38th minutes Eve Barry and Nicole Morales both had shots blocked by the KSU defense.

The Miners leveled the score in the 44th minute when Quintero chased down a poorly cleared ball and dodged two defenders before calmly burying the ball in the back of the net.

UTEP continued its offensive onslaught in the second half, posting 12 total shots in the second frame.

Taya Lopez's shot on goal in the 56th minute was scooped up by Wehr, which was followed by four shots from the Miners that missed the target. Barry had a good chance on goal with 15 minutes left to play, but a deflection allowed the save from Wehr.

Quintero nearly bagged a brace in the 77th minute with a lofted shot from near half field, but the Owls keeper was able to make an acrobatic stop to keep things even. Morales got close just a few minutes later in the 81st with a low hard shot to the center of the net, but Wehr was up to the challenge once again.

The Miners best chance of the evening came in the dying seconds of the match, but the ball glanced off Ashlee Mora's foot and Wehr was able to scramble and recover as time expired.

UTEP returns to University Field next Thursday (9/26) for its CUSA home opener against Middle Tennessee. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT.
