UTEP’s Murillo, Simpson Claim Victories, Multiple Miners Set PRs on Day 1 at Texas Tech’s Corky Classic Friday in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – The UTEP track and field team opened the 2025 season with a bang as Marissa Simpson captured the women's 60-meter hurdles championship and Natalie J. Murillo won the women's weight throw section at the Texas Tech Corky Classic at the Sports Performance Center on Friday.

Simpson clocked in a personal-best 8.02 in the 60 hurdles final. The senior sprinter opened her season with an 8.30 in round one to qualify for the semifinals, in which she raced out to a then-personal-best 8.09 and first overall to advance to the 60H finals. Simpson's previous best was an 8.11, while her new time of 8.02 ranks third in program history. Howard's Marcia Sey was second with an 8.11.

Murillo won the weight throw B section with a personal-best toss of 16.83 meters (55-2.75). She placed ninth overall. The senior thrower's previous best toss was 16.65 meters (54-7.5). Murillo's mark ranks 10^th in program history.

Esther Osisike followed her teammate with a second-place showing in the women's weight throw with a personal-best mark of 16.33 meters (53-7).

Alla Parov posted a 4.06-meter (13-3.75) mark in the women's pole vault and finished tied for fourth.

Mathew Polk clocked in a personal-best 49.41in the men's 400-meter dash final. Julio Pacheco Estrada turned in a 47.72.

Transfer Samoya Neil leaped 5.90 meters (19-4.25) in her first long jump event as a Miner. The senior's mark ranks 10^th on the program's all-time list.

Saturday's field events will commence at 11 a.m. CT/10 MT and the gun goes off for the running events at 11 a.m. CT/10 MT.
