JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – UTEP softball (10-10, 0-1 CUSA) opened Conference USA play on Friday evening, falling 6-0 to Jax State (16-7, 1-0 CUSA) at Jana McGinnis Field.
The Miners were held to just one hit in the contest, a double by Ajia Richard in the fourth inning. Despite reaching third base after advancing on a wild pitch, UTEP was unable to capitalize, as Jax State's Kat Carter (6-2) threw a complete-game shutout with four strikeouts and just one walk allowed.
Jax State took an early lead in the first inning when Amber Reed's RBI double brought home Emma Elrod. The Gamecocks broke the game open in the fourth with a five-run frame, highlighted by Aria Davis' two-RBI double. UTEP's defense struggled in the inning, committing an error that led to two unearned runs.

The Miners return to action for Game 2 of the three-game series against Jax State on Saturday, March 8. Due to impending weather, first pitch has been moved up to 11 a.m. MT.
