Mencaglia Picks Up All-Conference Honors In Singles

DALLAS – UTEP tennis senior standout Carlotta Mencaglia has been voted to All-CUSA Second Team for singles, the league office revealed Tuesday. She becomes the first Miner to land all-league accolades in singles since Kirsten Prelle (first team) in 2019.

Mencaglia, who teamed up with Hanna Telzynska to be an All-CUSA performer last year in doubles, becomes just the third Miner in program history to secure all-league recognition for both singles and doubles during their career. She joins Tanja Majoc and Jana Perkova, both of whom achieved the feat when the Orange and Blue competed in the Western Athletic Conference. Majoc was recognized as All-WAC singles four times and All-WAC Doubles twice while Perkova garnered all-league honors for doubles two times and singles once.

"This is a great way for her to end her collegiate career," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "She is such a great leader and team player. This honor is well deserved. We are so proud of Lotti."

The senior leader was second on the squad for overall wins in singles with a mark of 14-10, which was aided by rolling to a record of 8-2 at No. 1 singles. That figure could have been even higher as eight other of her matches went unfinished due to clinch format being in place.

She was a perfect 2-0 at the top slot to help UTEP post back-to-back road victories against DI opponents for the first time in nine years. The native of Italy knocked off Southern's Paris Washington, 6-0, 6-1, in a 4-0 victory (3/11/25). She followed that up by producing a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, triumph against Nicholl State's Aada Inna, helping the Miners erase a 3-0 deficit in the 4-3 road win against the Colonels (3/13/25). Her efforts led to her being named the CUSA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week on March 19. It was her second career weekly award, tying as the most by any Miner since UTEP joined the league.

Mencaglia helped the Orange and Blue finish with a winning percentage of at least .500 for the first time since the Miners went 11-11 in 2016. Included was a 4-0 drubbing of Sam Houston on April 6, marking the Miners' fifth consecutive victory on "Senior Day."

She got hot in the middle of the spring, winning five straight and seven of eight at one point. She drilled New Mexico's Rebekkah Gaines, 6-2, 6-2, to help pick up a point against the Lobos (2/14/25). Other notable efforts included blasting Grambling State's Emmory Simmons, 6-0, 6-0, in UTEP's 5-0 neutral-site triumph (4/12/25) and cruising past Weber State's Sydney Schnell, 6-2, 3-0 (retired) in a 4-0 win (2/6/25).

Mencaglia also showed out in the fall, compiling six triumphs. Her toughness was on full display, with half of them coming in three sets.
