UTEP Opens Mountain West Play at Rival (RV) New Mexico in 81st Meeting Saturday at 2 p.m.

10/1/2026 3:51:00 PM

NOTES: UTEP | NEW MEXICO | MOUNTAIN WEST

EL PASO – UTEP will play in its first-ever Mountain West contest as it takes on longtime foe (RV) New Mexico in the 81st meeting on Saturday, Oct. 3. The Lobos are receiving votes in the AFCA Coaches Poll. The Miners (1-3, 0-0 MW) and Lobos (3-1, 0-0 MW) are slated for a 2 p.m. MDT kickoff in University Stadium. UTEP and New Mexico will face each other as conference rivals for the first time in 28 years.

The Miners and Lobos can be heard on the "Home of UTEP Football" 600 ESPN El Paso, while the contest will be streamed on MW+.

The Miners and Lobos will renew their rivalry for the first time in four seasons. Since 1998, UTEP has faced New Mexico 10 times. The Miners are 6-4 in the last 10 meetings. UTEP last played UNM in 2022 at University Stadium, where the Lobos won 27-10.

UTEP is coming off a 33-7 setback against Oregon State on Sept. 26, in the 94th Homecoming Game. EJ Colson Jr. found Carver Cheeks on a six-yard touchdown pass for the Miners' only points on the night. For Cheeks, it was his third consecutive game with a receiving touchdown, while Colson Jr. has thrown seven touchdown passes this season, ranking among the top three in the MW. Justin Content impressed again on defense, tallying nine tackles. Content has 19 tackles in his last two games.

Jayden Wilson, a standout linebacker from Austin High School, makes his return to New Mexico, where he started his collegiate career. Wilson played in 23 games with four starts during the 2023 and 2024 campaigns.

"It's a blessing being able to go back there and be where it all started," Wilson said. "Four years later, here I am, and I'm blessed to be [at UTEP] and this team. It's a full 180 moment. I'm just super excited to be in the Orange and Blue and to take on the Lobos."

New Mexico improved to 3-1 on the season after a 42-18 victory over rival NM State on Sept. 26, in Las Cruces. The Lobos opened the campaign with a 38-7 victory over Central Michigan on Sept. 5, and followed with a 70-7 drubbing of Mercyhurst on Sept. 12. UNM came up short at No. 24/21 Oklahoma, 14-6, on Sept. 19, in Norman. The Lobos rank first nationally with a +14 turnover margin, as they have not turned the ball over so far in 2026 and have intercepted an FBS-high nine passes through the first four games. In FBS, UNM ranks 15th in rushing defense (83.8) and total defense (252.0), eighth in scoring defense (11.5), seventh in tackles for loss (8.3), and 19th in team sacks (3.0).

"New Mexico doesn't beat themselves," third-year UTEP head coach Scotty Walden said. "I give a ton of credit to [New Mexico's] coaching staff and how hard their kids play. We have a ton of respect for our opponent. They're disciplined; they don't allow explosive plays on defense. Statistically, they're the best defense in the league. They tackle really well in the open field, and they are assignment-sound. They're not necessarily exotic in what they do on either side of the ball; it's just that they do not have critical missed assignments and errors. They are going to make you beat them. That's their biggest attribute; they're not going to mess it up. They will play sound and steady football. They're well coached, their kids play extremely hard, and they've done a great job recruiting. It's definitely going to be a challenge right out of the gate."
