EL PASO, Texas – UTEP softball dropped a tight 3-2 decision to New Mexico Tuesday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field.

The Miners move to 8-10 on the season, while the Lobos improve to 10-9.

UTEP battled back late but couldn't overcome three solo home runs by New Mexico in a competitive midweek contest. After falling behind 3-0 through four innings, the Miners responded in the sixth with two unearned runs to cut the deficit to one and put pressure on the Lobos down the stretch.

Four Miners recorded hits on the afternoon — Marissa Burchard, Kenna Carranza, Halle Hogan and BriGarcia — with Hogan, Burchard and Carranza each lacing a double. Carranza drove in one RBI in the sixth-inning rally, while Cece Marquez added a stolen base. Brantley Lavas accounted for UTEP's lone walk of the contest as the Miners totaled four hits and applied late pressure despite the setback.

UNM 3, UTEP 2

New Mexico took an early lead in the top of the first inning with a solo home run to right center, going up 1-0. The score held until the fourth, when the visitors used back-to-back solo shots — one to left center and another to right field — to extend the advantage to 3-0.

UTEP answered in the bottom of the sixth inning. Burchard crossed the plate after Camrynn Guthrie reached on a throwing error by the second baseman, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Carranza then doubled to center field to bring home Guthrie, with both Miner runs in the frame scored as unearned.

UTEP continued to apply pressure late but was unable to plate the tying run as New Mexico secured the 3-2 win.

UTEP opens Conference USA play this weekend, March 6-8, at Helen of Troy Field as the Miners welcome Sam Houston for a three-game series.
