SHOT PUT RESULTS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – UTEP's Michael Kpomassy recorded a personal-best throw in the men's shot put but came up short of advancing to the next round at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships West First Round at John McDonnell Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Kpomassy hurled the shot put a personal-best 18.64 meters (61-2), finished 15th overall in first round action, coming up three spots short of punching his ticket to the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene. The freshman recorded his new mark on his third attempt. He had a 17.56-meter toss (57-7.5) on his first throw. Oregon's Kobe Lawrence (18.69m), Cal's Nikolas Iwankiw (18.68m), and South Dakota's Brandon Vander Sluis (18.67m) finished ahead of Kpomassy. Oregon freshman Ben Smith was first overall at 20.50 meters (67-3.25), and Nebraska freshman Nencu Lamberts was second at 20.24 meters (66-5).

Kpomassy's new mark ranks ninth on the program's top 10 list.

"I'm very proud of Michael Kpmossay and the way he competed today at the NCAA West First Round. Michael finished 15th overall in the West Region and was only five centimeters away from advancing to Eugene," first-year UTEP head coach Francesca Green said. "To accomplish that as a freshman and in only his third official meet competing in a UTEP uniform says a lot about his talent, maturity, and future. He represented this program the right way and competed with confidence on one of the biggest stages in college track & field. I'm very proud of Mike and the work he has put in all season long. This is another big step forward for our program and a glimpse of what's ahead."

Kpomassy made his return to Fayetteville after recording his first official collegiate shot put mark at the Arkansas Twilight on May 8. Kpomassy had a 16.87-meter throw (55-4.25) and followed that with a gold-medal performance at the Conference USA Championships on May 15, hurling 17.94 meters (58-10.25). Kpomassy ranks 43rd on the West Region qualifying list.
