FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- The UTEP women's tennis team fell to Utah State in a neutral site match at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Aggies edged the Miners 4-3 in a down-to-the-wire match. The Miners are now 4-9 on the spring season while the Aggies improved to 8-3.
Tied at three apiece, the deciding match was between the Aggies' Hannah Jones and UTEP's Lois Wagenvoort on court five. Jones broke a tiebreaker in the first set, then ran away with the second set to secure the Utah State victory after a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win.
The Miners' doubles tandem Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz, ranked No. 55 in Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, took down the Aggies' Maggie O'Meara and Ekaterina Tugarinova 6-3 on court one, but Utah State garnered wins on courts two and three to earn the doubles point. Utah State's Nini Guensler and Sabrina Demerath defeated Duda Santos and Lois Wagenvoort 6-4 and Lucy Octave and Jenna Kane beat Daphne Visscher and Raven Bennett 6-2.
Down 1-0, Kulicke quickly put the Miners on the board with her singles victory on court one. Kulicke dominated Nini Guensler in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. On court three, Visscher fell to Octave 6-3, 7-5 but Bennett, continuing her strong play this weekend, evened up the match again at two-all with her clutch 6-4, 7-5, victory over Demerath at the No. 6 spot.
Santos gave the Miners a brief lead after beating Monika Van de Vondel 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 on court four, another close match on court 2 went in the Aggies' favor as Tugarinova slipped past Pietersz 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. That left the deciding match on court five, where Jones sealed the Utah State victory.
