HONOLULU, Hawai'i –
The UTEP softball team fell to 9-11 after falling to Hawai'i (9-7), 5-0, on Saturday night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in the Texaco Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.

Hawai'i starting catcher Callee Heen put her squad on the board with a two-run home run in the second inning.

After the Rainbow Wahine scored three runs in the fourth, the Miners loaded the bases in the top fifth but couldn't sustain more offense to punch the runners across as Hawai'i starting pitcher Brittany Hitchcock (5-3) tallied a strikeout to end the threat.

Courtney Clayton recorded three singles in the contest, giving the senior her 62nd multi-hit game and is now one behind Chelsea Troupe, who ranks second.

Ariel Blair also gathered two singles as the first came in the first inning. Clayton followed with her first single of the game with one out, advancing Blair to third base.  Clayton then stole her second to put two runners in scoring position, but the runners were left on base when Hitchcock struck out a batter and forced a ground out to end the top half.

Clayton's third hit went down the left line and advanced to second as Kaitlin Ryder, who reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third. But again, Hitchcock kept the UTEP bats in check and forced a ground out to end the contest.

Kira McKechnie, in a relief appearance, threw 2.2 frames and struck out a career-high four batters, including two looking. Kacey Duffield and Ariana Valles also each added knocks for UTEP. Julia Wright made the start, throwing 3.0 frames, striking out a pair and walking none.

The Miners also turned their 10th double play of the season.
