UTEP Track & Field’s Ruth Jerubet, Shakeem Smith Highlight the Final Day at Masked Rider Open

LUBBOCK, Texas – UTEP freshman Ruth Jerubet won gold in the women's 1500m, and senior Shakeem Smith raced out to a first-place finish in the men's 400m hurdles on the final day at Texas Tech's Masked Rider Open on Saturday afternoon at Fuller Track and Field. 
 
Jerubet, who won her second collegiate race, clocked in a 4:36.59 in her first career 1500m event. Smith crossed the finish line first with a time of 50.48 in the 400m hurdles, tallying his third career victory in the event. 
 
A trio of Miners earned silver medals on Saturday. Titus Cheruiyot competed in his first collegiate 3000m steeplechase and posted a mark of 9:40.67 for a second-place finish. Chevannie Hanson posted a personal-best 46.51 in the 400m, and Carolyne Chepkosgei ran a 2:10.16 in the 800m.
 
Karol Koncos placed third in the hammer throw with a season-best 61.56m (202-0) heave. Maribel Caicedo posted a season-best 13.57 in the 100m hurdles for a bronze showing. Kenneth Talavera competed in his first career 800m event and placed third with a time of 1:51.89. Ned Azemia finished in third in the 400m hurdles, clocking in a 52.05. Maxwell Kipkosgei's time of 3:59.04 earned the freshman a bronze showing in the 1500m.
 
Sah-Jay Stevens posted a personal-best 14.35 (47-1) in the shot put, and Aleks Hristov recorded a personal-best 55.40 in the discus on Friday afternoon.
 
The men's 4x100m relay team composed of Smith, Jevaughn Powell, Sean Bailey and Dennis Johnson clocked in a 40.45, which would rank second in Conference USA.
 
Up Next
UTEP will compete at a pair of meets on April 15-17. The Miners will head to Azusa, Calif., for the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific, and to San Antonio for the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by UTSA.
