A Pair of Miners Take First Place at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational Saturday Afternoon

RESULTS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Kenneth Talavera and Jordani Woodley finished in first place in their respective events, as the UTEP track and field team completed the second day at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational to wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Albuquerque Convention Center. 
 
Talavera ran a personal-best 4:08.75 in the men's mile to capture first place. His time ranks second in Conference USA. Talavera also placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.86, which ranks no. 2 in C-USA. Victor Kibiego placed third in the mile, posting a time of 4:13.87. 
 
Woodley crossed the finish line first in the men's 60-meter hurdles, clocking in a time of 7.93. The freshman won his first career finals event.
 
"What a difference from yesterday. Both teams bounced back with an outstanding day," UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. "This gives us lot of confidence heading into next weekend's conference indoor championships and is exactly the boost we needed from this event. Less is more next week; the plan is to stay healthy and keep things simple while putting final touches on the track as well as in strategy meetings when planning our team entries for best possible outcomes. The student-athletes are well prepared and ready to sacrifice for their teams just to have a shot at the team title!"
 
Carolyne Chepkosgei competed in the women's 800-meter run, placing second with a time of 2:07.60, which ranks no. 1 in C-USA. 
 
Jevaughn Powell clocked in a 47.16 in the men's 400-meter dash, ranking no. 1 in C-USA. 
 
Ned Azemia, Powell, Aman Verma and Karon Dean competed in the men's 4x400-meter relay, turning in a time of 3:15.03, ranking second in C-USA. 
 
Krishna Jayasankar hurled a personal-best 14.20m (46-7.25) mark in the women's shot put, ranking fifth in C-USA. 
 
Osaze Williams's time of 1:54.11 in the men's 800-meter run ranks fourth in C-USA. 
 
UP NEXT
The Miners will look to win Indoor titles at the 2022 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Alabama at the Birmingham Crossplex on Feb. 19-20.
