BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky – The UTEP softball team (10-16, 1-4 Conference USA) fell to Western Kentucky (20-4, 4-1 C-USA) 2-1 in game two of the series Saturday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Hilltoppers used a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to down the Miners. UTEP, however, received a solid start from
Aalijah Alarcon in the circle. The freshman threw 6.2 frames (1 ER) and struck out three.
After two scoreless innings, the Hilltoppers were first to strike from an RBI standing double by Taylor Davis in the third.
The Miners finally got into scoring position as
Pate Cathey posted UTEP's first hit of the day in the fifth, singling to right center with one out.
Ashlynn Allen followed with a walk, while the runners advanced to second and third after a groundout. But WKU's pitching held UTEP's bats in check, forcing a pop out to end the top half.
Anna Sample roped in the tying run with a solo home run over right field as she led off for the Miners in the seventh.
The Hilltoppers found themselves in scoring position as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the final frame off two singles and a walk with two outs on the board. WKU's Taylor Saunders singled through the left side that brought in Davis for the 2-1 walk-off victory.
