UTEP Tennis To Close Out Regular Season At Home With Two Matches

4/14/2022 9:24:00 AM

EL PASO, Texas– The UTEP tennis team (6-10) will wrap up the regular season at home with match-ups against Seward County Community College (11 a.m. Friday) and the University of the Southwest (11 a.m. Sunday). Admission is free to both matches, and seniors Kathleen Percegona and Lina Sachica will be honored as part of "Senior Day" on Sunday

The matches afford the Miners the opportunity to gain momentum prior to the 2022 Conference USA Championships (April 21-24).

"It's hard to realize that we are to the point in the season where our two seniors play the last two home matches of their career," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "I know they want to finish strong this weekend before the C-USA Championships next week. We are excited to close out our season at home, and the team is ready for the last two matches."

Sachica is a three-year letter winner for UTEP who has tallied 45 combined wins in that timeframe. She has registered 25 triumphs in singles action and 20 in doubles. She has 11 singles wins in 2021-22, tying for her most in a campaign, and is poised to build upon that figure this weekend.

Percegona has been a key part of the Miners' line-up since her arrival in the Sun City in 2018-19. During that timeframe she has compiled 52 total wins, racking up 22 victories in singles and 30 in doubles. She has saved the best for last, setting personal single-season bests for both singles (nine) and doubles (14) wins in 2021-22.
