EL PASO, Texas– The UTEP tennis team will lock up with No. 49 Charlotte in the opening round of the 2022 Conference USA Championships hosted by Middle Tennessee at 11 a.m. MT/12 p.m. CT Thursday. The 14th-seeded Miners (8-10) will be looking to spring the upset on the third-seeded 49ers (16-6) to secure their first win at the league championships since 2009.
"It's hard to believe that we are already at the end of our season," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We have had a lot of ups and downs this semester, but we are ready for the C-USA Championships. We are very excited to play Charlotte in the first round. We have never played them before, and I know they are an extremely solid team. This will be a tremendous experience for us, and we will fight with everything we have to take advantage of this opportunity."
UTEP is playing its best tennis of the season, having won two straight and six of eight down the stretch to enter the match against Charlotte with momentum.
Veronika Lebisova (10-3) and
Carlotta Mencaglia (10-6) share the team lead for victories during dual season while
Elena Dibattista (8-9) is two back.
Lina Sachica (six),
Kathleen Percegona (six) and
Thassane Abrahim (five) all have at least five victories in dual singles play. Overall on the year Lebisova tops the squad with a record of 18-8.
In doubles action the pairing of Abrahim and Lebisova has produced an overall mark of 16-10, including 11-4 during the dual campaign. Daniels and Mencaglia have joined forces to go 7-2 at No. 2 doubles while Dibattista and Percegona are 7-1 at No. 3 doubles.
