Bernal, Jerubet lead UTEP T&F on Day One of Sun Angel Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – Daniel Bernal and Ruth Jerubet headlined UTEP track and field's first day of the outdoor season at the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State at Joe Selleh Track & Sun Angel Stadium on Friday.
 
Bernal, a transfer from Furman, ran his first collegiate outdoor 3000-meter race, clocking in an 8:11.33. Jerubet also competed in her first career 3000 event, turning in a time of 9:48.55.
 
"It was a promising opening day for our outdoor season," UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. "Some of our student-athletes have taken a big leap forward since the indoor season. I'm very excited about tomorrow – day two of this event!"
 
Maribel Caicedo finished in first place in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries, clocking in a personal-best 13.28 (-0.3). Her previous best was 13.52. Caicedo will race in the finals on Saturday at 5:50 p.m. PT/6:50 MT.
 
Jordani Woodley also advanced to the finals, placing first in the 110-meter hurdles prelims. The freshman competed in his first collegiate outdoor event, clocking in a 13.75. Woodley will run the finals on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT/7 MT.
 
Sah-Jay Stevens placed fourth in the women's hammer throw, but it was her mark that was impressive. Stevens unleashed a personal-best 59.64-meter (195-8) toss, shattering her previous mark of 44.53m (146-1).
 
Titus Cheruiyot set his personal-best in the 3000-meter run, clocking in an 8:13.21 and finishing second behind Bernal. Cheruiyot's previous best was 8:32.49. Rodgers Korir fished fourth in the 3000, posting a personal-best 8:25.19. Korir's previous best was 8:37.94. Juan Olmos finished fifth, but set his personal-best with a time of 8:27.04. Olmos's previous best was 8:56.08 while competing at the University of Houston last season. Gabriel Armijo also ran a PR, clocking in an 8:47.24. Armijo's previous best was a 9:17.95 while competing at Houston in 2019.
