EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team will commence its dual-match season by playing at Pacific-12 foe Arizona at 9 a.m. MT Sunday. The match was originally slated for 9 a.m. MT Monday before it was decided early Sunday to switch the date of the competition due to weather. The contest is the first of two straight against Power-Five opposition to open the year, with the Miners playing at Texas Tech at 2 p.m. MT on Jan. 22.
UTEP put together a solid effort at the fall in three different tournaments, practically in doubles action where it combined to forge a 17-10 mark. The team will now have a chance to build on those performances in the spring season.
"We are excited to kick off our spring season playing a great Pac-12 team in the University of Arizona," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We always look forward to opponents like this as it really tests us to see what we need to continue to improve on for the rest of the season. The team has practiced extremely hard these last six days to prepare for a very challenging match, but we are up for the test."
All three doubles pairs in the fall finished with winning records, with
Thassane Abrahim and
Veronika Lebisova (6-3) and
Elena Dibattista and
Zuzanna Szczepanska (6-3) sharing the top spot.
Eve Daniels and
Carlotta Mencaglia teamed up to produce a 5-4 mark.
Lebisova (5-3), Abrahim (4-4) and Mencaglia (4-4) all compiled records of .500 or better in singles action.
