EL PASO, Texas – On the heels of knocking off Western New Mexico, 7-0, in its home opener on Jan. 20, the UTEP tennis team will hit the road to play at BIG 12 foe Texas Tech at 2 p.m. MT/3 p.m. CT Sunday. It will be the second match-up on the season for the Miners (1-1) against a Power Five opponent. UTEP was clipped, 5-1, at Pac-12 member Arizona in its campaign opener on Jan. 15.
"We are really excited to get a chance to play a strong BIG 12 team on Sunday vs. top 40 nationally-ranked Texas Tech," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "This makes two top-50 opponents in last seven days. We are ready for the challenge and to get some great match experience. We know these matches will help to prepare us for the rest of the season."
UTEP's strength thus far in the dual season has been in doubles action, where the Miners have claimed the doubles point in both contests. Six different Miners have also tasted one victory in singles action.
Veronika Lebisova was leading in the third set of her match at Arizona before it was called due to rain.
After the tilt against Tech, the Orange and Blue will have a chance to move to 2-0 at home when they play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11 a.m. MT Wednesday.
