ABILENE, Texas – The UTEP tennis team picked up five wins in a bounce-back day at the Wildcat Invitational Saturday.
Veronika Lebisova improved to 4-0 at the event with a victory in both singles and doubles.
Hanna Telzynska and
Emma Stuart also posted triumphs in singles.
"We had a much better day today," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We split the singles with ACU, winning at No. 1 (Lebisova), No. 3 (Telzynska) and No. 6 (Stuart). We have chances at No. 5 with Paloma (Hennicaux), who was unable to play doubles. In doubles we won No. 1 and No. 2 vs. Texas State. We had much better energy and intensity today, winning five of eight matches played. Veronika remains perfect after two days in both singles and doubles. We hope to finish strong tomorrow."
Lebisova downed Maria Cascos (ACU), 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-5, in a battle between the number one player for each squad. Telzynska cruised in straight sets, besting Maryjoe Crisologo (ACU), 6-3, 7-5. Stuart took out Eva Arranz (ACU), 6-1, 6-7 (5), 10-7.
Hennicaux put up a big fight only to ultimately succumb against Andrea Guerrero (ACU), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5.
Zuzanna Szczepanska was clipped by Olivia Sears (ACU), 6-1, 6-3, while
Elena Dibattista came up shy against Masha Vrsalovic (ACU), 6-3, 6-2.
Szczepanska and Dibattista blasted Mae McCutcheon and Jadeh Chan (Texas State), 6-0. Lebisova and Telzynska emerged victorious after a back-and-forth battle against Emma Carr and Andrea Pineda (Texas State), 7-6 (7-2).
The Orange and Blue will conclude play at the invitational on Sunday.
