NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The UTEP tennis team went undefeated in doubles (4-0) while securing four victories in singles play in an impressive showing on the second day of the CSUN Invite Saturday.
"We had a much better day today by winning all four doubles matches, including two vs CUSA rival Middle Tennessee," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We won four of eight singles vs. UC Irvine, getting wins from Lotti (Mencaglia), Ele (Dibattista), Palo (Hennicaux) and Emma (Stuart). We played much better today, and we hope we can finish strong tomorrow."
The Orange and Blue got things rolling in doubles, where they were in control across the board.
Zuzanna Szczepanska and
Veronika Lebisova blasted Eloise Swarbrick and Lena Peyer (Middle Tennessee), 6-1.
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska also took down a tandem from MT, knocking off Sana Garakani and Hrudaya Shah (Middle Tennessee), 6-4.
Elena Dibattista and
DeCora Antoine bested Fatima Nemi Revilla and Carmen Bufkin (Cal Lutheran), 6-3.
Paloma Hennicaux and
Emma Stuart capped the perfect showing for the squad with a 7-6 victory against Zara Fung and Leyanne Hirota (Pacific).
Mencaglia was leading Asha Gidwani (UC Irvine), 5-0, when her opponent defaulted. Dibattista rolled in straight sets against Haily Huynh (UC Irvine), 6-2, 6-4. Hennicaux drilled Carolyna Fowler (UCI), 6-3, 6-3. Stuart showed her resilience, taking down Emily Fowler (UCI) in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.
Lebisova was held off by Kayla Meraz (UCI), 6-4, 6-2. Szczepanska fell at the hands of Larissa Teramura (UCI), 6-2, 6-2. Telzynska went back-and-forth only to come up just shy in three sets against Nour Khayat (UCI), 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Antoine was unable to pull off a triumph in a 6-3, 6-3, vanquishing at the hands of Cydney Yamamoto (UCI).
The Miners will try to build on the momentum from the day as they conclude the fall season at the CSUN Invite on Sunday.
