BOISE, Idaho – The UTEP tennis team rolled to a 7-0 victory against NAIA program College of Idaho, 7-0, Sunday. The Miners (2-5) won all three doubles matches to take the point before cruising to six victories in straight sets in singles action to cap the dominating day.
"We made quick work of the match today," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernande said. "Our focus was much better today, but we still have a lot to work on in order to keep improving for the rest of the season."
UTEP was practically perfect at the onset of the match in doubles, dropping one game across all three matches.
Thassane Abrahim and
Veronika Lebisova drilled Laurene Kreutzer and Leiana Almaraz, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles.
Elena Dibattista and
Zuzanna Szczepanska also won by that score, taking out Morgan Leavitt and Brooke McNeel at the No. 3 position.
Carlotta Mencaglia Eve Daniels controlled from beginning to end in a 6-1 vanquishing of Nicole Tran and Anna Willcuts at No. 2 doubles.
The Orange and Blue continued to pour it on in singles play. They won all six of the matches, including three of them by a count of 6-0, 6-0.
Abrahim was locked in during the 6-0, 6-0, triumph against Leavitt against No. 3 singles. Szczepanska followed suit by staking a victory by the same score over Tran at No. 4 singles. Dibattista also was in top form, derailing Summer Townsend, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.
Daniels took out Willcuts, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles while Mencaglia won for the second time in as many days after waxing Almarez, 6-0, 6-1, at the top spot. Lebisova capped the perfect all-around performance by UTEP by defeating Kreutzer, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 2 singles.
The Miners will shoot for their second straight win while initiating a four-match homestand against UIW at 12 p.m. MT Friday. UTEP will also lock up with Northern Arizona (10 a.m.-Feb. 18), Abilene Christian (10 a.m.-Feb. 25) and New Mexico (10 a.m.-Feb. 26). The match with the Lobos will serve as the "915 contest" for the Orange and Blue. Each of the matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Center, and admission is free.
