UTEP’s Belik Takes Gold on Day 1 at C-USA ITF Championships Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UTEP's Jakub Belik headlined the first day when the sophomore claimed the men's high jump title after he cleared a personal-best 2.14m (7-0.25) at the 2023 Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala., at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Saturday afternoon.

"It was a typical conference championships day one - a rollercoaster ride with lots of ups and downs," UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. "I think we qualified as expected as a team and did will in today's finals."
 
SATURDAY'S POINT GETTERS
Daniel Bernal also medaled, placing second in the men's 5000-meter race (14:09.51), while Titus Cheruiyot finished fourth (14:19.84).
 
Ruth Jerubet claimed bronze in the women's 5000m, clocking in a 17:01.31. 
 
Jalen Cadet produced a successful start in the heptathlon. Cadet won the 60-meter dash, clocking in a 6.99 and taking first in the high jump with a 2.02m leap. The sophomore took second in the long jump, turning in a 6.90m effort.
 
Senior Emilio Rios tallied 3.5 points, placing fifth (1.94m, 6-4.25) in the men's high jump, and Cadet recorded 1.5 points (1.89m, 6-2.25). 
 
Freshman Atiq Muhammad tallied three points with a sixth-place showing in the men's long jump, recording a personal-best 7.29m (23-11.0). 
 
SATURDAY'S PRELIMINARIES
Marissa Simpson will compete in the 60-meter hurdles finals after a first-place finished with an 8.20. 
 
Denae McFarlane (7.382) and Niesha Burgher (7.384) both clocked in a 7.39 to finish one and two in the 60-meter dash, respectively, to advance to Sunday's final.
 
Burgher (23.59), who won the prelims, McFarlane (24.25) and Simpson (24.43) will also compete in the women's 200-meter finals. 
 
Jordani Woodley dashed out to a second-place showing in the men's 60-meter hurdles, clocking in a 7.93, to compete in the Sunday's final. 
 
Loubna Benhadja (55.65) and Oghenekaro Brume (56.56) qualified to run Sunday in the 400-meter dash. 
 
Kenneth Talavera (1:52.45) and Maxwell Kipkosgei (1:52.71) will see action on Sunday in the 800-meter finals, while Talavera (4:08.94) will run the mile final. 
 
Julio Pacheco Estrada will compete in the 400-meter dash finals after qualifying with a 48.03. 
 
In the men's 60-meter preliminaries, Karon Dean (6.70) and Dennis Johnson (6.77) advanced to the finals. 
 
The UTEP men's 4x400-meter relay team (Joshua Hill, Pacheco Estrada, Woodley, and Dean) will run at 1:50 p.m. MT, while the meet will conclude at 2:15 p.m. MT with the women's 4x400-meter relay, featuring the Miners' no. 1 team composed of Brume, Benhadja, Carshaylah Harrison and Burgher. 
 
Sunday's final day of competition will begin 8:30 a.m. CT/7:30 MT with the conclusion of the heptathlon. The field events will start at 10 a.m. CT/9 MT with the men's shot put, while the running events will go at noon CT/11 a.m. MT with the men's mile final.
