UTEP Softball Prepares for Action Packed Week in New Mexico

EL PASO – The UTEP softball team (7-7) is set to take on New Mexico (6-9) for a midweek doubleheader in Albuquerque, N.M., on Wednesday (March 1) at 3 & 5 p.m. MT. Following Wednesday's matchup, the Miners will travel back down south to participate in NM State's Round Robin March 4-5 as they face off against the Aggies (7-6) and the Northern Colorado Bears (6-9).

Leading Off 

  • Through three weekends of play, UTEP leads Conference USA in doubles (30), doubles per game (2.14), double plays per game (0.71) and slugging percentage (0.566). The Miners' doubles count ranks third in the NCAA. 

  • UTEP batted .330 through the first 14 games (which included a Top 5 opponent) paced by five players with 30-plus plate appearances who were batting at or above the mark (Morales, Favre, P. Angulo, Allen, Dooner). Leading the way is junior Lexi Morales who is hitting .500 on 20 hits with six (6) doubles and 10 RBI. She's slugged .650 with a .600 on-base percentage.   

  • Morales is one of three Miners to have double digit RBIs already on the season, with Savannah Favre and Rylan Dooner totaling 11 each. 

  • Dooner was also on fire in the batter's box last weekend, going 7-for-14 at the plate with two (2) doubles, one (1) triple and one (1) home run. She batted .500 and slugged 1.000. 

  • Nine (9) players have posted at least one home run for the Miners. UTEP has shredded 18 home runs through 14 games with Ajia Richard accounting for four (4). 

  • Six (6) arms combined in the circle at the UTEP Invitational with three aces tabbing a win. Zaylie Calderon combined for 10.0 innings with six (6) strikeouts that included a complete game win over Tarleton State. 

  • UTEP had 22 of 25 players see action during a game at some point this season.

The Opponents  

New Mexico 

  • UNM is 6-9 on the season 

  • UNM is 5-1 when scoring first and when scoring in the 1st inning 

  • The Lobos are 6-0 when leading after the 4th, 3-0 when leading after the 5th and 3-0 when leading after the 6th 

  • In UNM's 6 wins, 3 have been of the run-rule variety, the Lobos have scored 10 or more runs in 3 and scored 8 or more runs in 5. 

  • 8 of Maddie Boldt's 13 RBI have come with two outs and as a team, 37 of UNM's 67 RBI have come with two outs. 

  • Rachael Hathoot leads the MW in triples with three. 

Northern Colorado  

  • UNC sits at 6-9 on the season  

  • The team is led by Lauren Strathearn with a .452 batting average with 19 hits. She is slugging .524 with a .489 on-base percentage 

  • UNC has utilized four (4) pitchers through 15 games, with Erin Caviness leading the charge with a team-high 43.0 innings in nine (9) appearances and seven (7) starts. Caviness has a 2.93 ERA with 38 strikeouts and eight (8) walks, 46 hits and 26 runs allowed (18 earned) and is 5-2. As a staff, the Bears carry a 4.24 ERA, allowing 124 hits and striking out 75. They have given up 22 doubles, and five (5) triples and home runs. 

  • UTEP leads the all-time series 18-4 

NM State  

  • NM state sits at 7-6 on the season 

  • The team is led by Jayleen Burton with a .333 batting average with nine (9) hits. She is slugging .333 with a .379 on-base percentage 

  • The Aggies have combined to hit 13 home runs to average 1.44 home runs per game, ranking 11th in the nation 

  • NM State has utilized six (6) pitchers through 13 games, with Aydenne Brown leading the charge with a team-high 34.1 innings in eight (8) appearances and five (5) starts. Brown has a 3.06 ERA with 42 strikeouts and 12 walks, 21 hits and 13 runs allowed (12 earned) and is 4-2. As a staff, the Aggies carry a 6.60 ERA allowing 103 hits and striking out 78. They have given up 15 doubles and 17 home runs 

  • The Aggies lead the all-time series, 38-12
