EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team will return to action when it challenges Ivy league member Penn (7-2) at 11 a.m. MT in Tucson, Ariz., on Monday. It will mark the first action for the Miners (2-7) since they had a match against New Mexico halted to winds on Feb. 26. UTEP was leading the match, 2-1, when it was forced to be stopped due to gusts of 70+ mph.
"After having one match canceled and one match suspended due to wind last weekend, we are ready to get back out on the court," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We know that Penn is a strong team, but we are up for the challenge. We have been playing better with each match and look to continue to improve a little every day."
The Miners will vie to start strong in doubles action, relying on the No. 1 doubles pairing of
Thassane Abrahim and
Veronika Lebisova to set the tone. The duo is 5-3 in dual play thus far at the top spot and is coming off a victory in the match against the Lobos before the contest was started. The other two pairings (
Elena Dibattista and
Zuzanna Szczepanska and
Eve Daniels and
Carlotta Mencaglia) have also played well, sporting three wins each.
In singles action, three different individuals (Abrahim, Dibattista and Mencaglia) have produced a quartet of victories in dual action while Lebisova sports three triumphs.
