UTEP Softball Opens Conference Play at UTSA

EL PASO - The UTEP softball team (8-12) will open Conference USA play at UTSA (4-17) for a three-game series at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas. The games will be played on Friday (March 10) at 5 p.m. MT, Saturday (March 11) at 12 p.m. MT, and Sunday (March 12) at 11 a.m. MT. 

The matchups will be streamed on CUSA.tv, with live stats also available. 
  
Leading Off for the Miners 

  • Through four (4) weekends of play, UTEP leads Conference USA in doubles (38), doubles per game (1.90), and slugging percentage (0.525). The Miners' doubles count ranks fourth in the NCAA.  

  • UTEP batted .310 through 20 non-conference games (which included a Top 5 opponent) paced by four players with 55-plus plate appearances who were batting at or above the mark (Morales, Favre, Dooner, P. Angulo). Leading the way is junior Lexi Morales who is hitting .459 on 28 hits with eight (8) doubles and 12 RBI. She's slugged .590 with a .568 on-base percentage.    

  • Morales is one of four Miners to have double digit RBIs already on the season, with Savannah Favre leading the way with 18, and Rylan Dooner and Anna Sample following with 16 and 14, respectively. 

  • In week four (4), Morales went 8-for-21 in the batter's box with two (2) doubles while Favre went 9-for-25 at the plate with one (1) double and two (2) home runs for seven (7) RBI.  

  • Nine (9) players have posted at least one home run for the Miners. UTEP has shredded more home runs than its opponents, 25-23, through 20 games with Favre, Sample, Ajia Richard, and Pate Cathey accounting for four (4) each. 

  • Six (6) arms combined in the circle in week four (4) with Zaylie Calderon tabbing a win over New Mexico on March 1. Calderon combined for 21.0 innings with 12 strikeouts that included an 11.0-inning complete game victory over the Lobos. Calderon's career-high 11.0 IP is the second most all-time in program history (Stacie Townsend – 13.0 IP, 2009 vs. East Carolina) 

  • UTEP had 23 of 25 players see action during a game at some point this season.

  • UTSA sits at 4-17 on the season   

  • The team is led by Kat Ibarra with a .352 batting average on 25 hits. She is slugging .535 with a .452 on-base percentage  

  • The Roadrunners have shown discipline at the plate to earn 98 walks, ranking third in the nation 

  • UTSA has utilized five (5) pitchers through 21 games, with Reagan Smith leading the charge with a team-high 47.1 innings in 13 appearances and seven (7) starts. Smith has a 3.11 ERA with 15 strikeouts and has given up 33 walks, 48 hits and 29 runs allowed (21 earned) and has a 1-5 record. As a staff, the Roadrunners carry a 4.87 ERA, allowing 161 hits and striking out 65. They have given up 31 doubles, five (5) triples and 20 home runs.  

  • UTSA leads the all-time series 22-13
