DENTON, Texas – The UTEP tennis team took an early edge against host North Texas in the first round, but the Mean Green swept through the singles matches on their way to a 4-1 victory at the 2023 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships on Thursday.

The Miners (5-14), who were the no. 11 seed, got off to a fast start by taking the doubles point, 2-1, against the sixth-seeded Mean Green (11-11). Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova defeated Jasmine Adams and Matilde Morais, 6-4, in match #1. With the double match tied 1-1, Eve Daniels and Carlotta Mencaglia chalked up the point with a 7-6 (7-5) victory over Glor Alogo Piqueras and Kexuan Zhou in match #3.

"We really came out with great energy this morning. We fought super hard and won the doubles point. We had a lot of chances in the singles today but we just haven't been in this position enough to finish these sets when leading," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "I'm really proud of how hard we played today, and I know we really scared North Texas. I'm so proud of the two seniors today. It has been such an honor to watch them grow and mature into amazing women. We are really going to miss Eve and "Tuca" [Thassane Abraham] and wish them all the best in their future. They will always be part of our UTEP Miner Tennis Family."

UNT took the next four points as Adams swept Lebisova (6-2, 7-5) on court #1. Zuzanna Szczepanska won the first set but fell in the next two sets to Olivia Malm (6-4, 4-6, 0-6) on court #3, Kexuan Zhou took two sets (6-4, 7-5) against Thassane Abrahim on court #4, and Nformi Stadfany defeated Elena Dibattista (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) on court #5.
