BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The UTEP Softball team capped the weekend with a program record of four double plays in a single game in the series finale against UAB, just one away from tying the NCAA record. Savannah Favre sits as the team leader with nine home runs this season as she whipped up her second home run in as many days Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field.
The Miners' late seventh-inning rally came up short as UAB completed the series sweep, 8-5.
UTEP tied the program's record of three double plays as the Miners produced twin killings to get out of each of the first three innings.
Caitlyn Brockway kicked off the fourth inning with a leadoff double. With two away, Ajia Richard smacked a single to left field to score Brockway putting the Miners first on the board, 1-0.
UAB's Seirra Frazier answered in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double and Lindsey Smith followed with a 3-RBI home run to roll past UTEP, 4-1. Smith recorded another RBI on a sacrifice fly to plate Lauren Brock in the fifth.
Back-to-back singles by Favre and Brockway opened the sixth inning. Anna Sample came up to the plate as a pinch hitter and made way for Favre to score on a sacrifice fly to center field.
UAB's Cass Greenwood singled as a pinch hitter to lead off for the Blazers in the bottom sixth. UTEP turned in its fourth double play just before the Blazers put two on making way for Brock to clear the bases with a single that extended the lead 8-2.
In UTEP's last offensive inning, Toni Gonzalez pinch hit for Lexi Morales and singled to first base with Karina Somoza following with a full-count walk. With one away, two on and a 3-1 count, Favre blasted her ninth home run of the season to close the deficit, 8-5.
