EL PASO, Texas – The Miner tennis team will play host to the third-annual UTEP Invitational from Friday through Sunday at the El Paso Tennis Club. Action will commence daily at 10 a.m., and admission is free of charge.
It is the fourth tournament of the fall for the Orange and Blue, who are coming off a quality showing at the ITA Mountain Regionals Oct. 17-19.
"We are excited to be hosting our third UTEP Invitational," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We will have players from Sam Houston, New Mexico State, and New Mexico. We look forward to a great weekend of tennis. We have been competing well throughout our fall season, and we hope to keep it going this weekend."
There will be three round robin singles flights and a pair of round robin doubles flights.
Most recently, UTEP showed off its talents against the top teams in the region while partaking in the ITA Mountain Regionals. The Miners boasted three doubles teams in the top flight for doubles while a trio of players also competed in the main field of singles. Both
Candice Bernier and
Carlotta Mencaglia advanced in top draw of singles while
Zuzanna Szczepanska fought her way into the competition through outstanding play in qualifying rounds.
It was the latest of achievements for UTEP this fall. At the ACU Invite (Sept. 27-29), this year's team became the first at the school since 2015 to secure both a singles and doubles flight championship at the same tournament.
The Orange and Blue were utterly dominant to christen the fall portion of the campaign, amassing a combined 20-7 record at the NM State Invitational (Sept. 20-22).
