UTEP Men’s Golf Shoots 272 in Round One, Tied Eighth after 36 at the Alistar MacKenzie Invitational Monday

DAY ONE RESULTS

FAIRFAX, Calif. – The UTEP men's golf team fired a 272 in round one and Braden Smith finished tied for 14thafter 36 holes at the 2024 Alistar MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club (par 71 | 6,734 yards) on Monday.   
 
The Miners (272-276—548) will head into tomorrow's final round tied for eighth place after playing two rounds. UTEP's 272 matched its season-best round. 
 
Leader Pacific (271-256) fired a 256 in the second round to shoot up the leaderboard at 41-under par 527. San Jose State (264-267—531) is second and four strokes (-37) behind the leader. Host Cal (266-270—536) is 32-under par. UTEP is tied with UC Davis (272-276—548) at 20-under par. UC Santa Barbara (291-272—563) is in last at 5-under par. 
 
Tuesday's final 18 holes will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT. Live results will be on Golfstat.
 
Smith (66-68) is tied for 14th with three other competitors and carded an 8-under par 134. The junior will tee off the final round five strokes behind the leader. Smith shot a season-best 66 in the first round and followed with a 68. Smith penciled in 11 birdies and 22 pars. Smith was even par on the front nine of round one and followed that with five birdies on the back to finish 5-under par. 
 
Max Schliesing (67-69) is tied for 22nd after shooting 6-under par 136. Schliesing opened the tournament with an eagle at one (par 5, 492 yards). He bogeyed the next two holes but rebounded to pencil in birdies at 4 and 9. Schliesing recorded five birdies on the back nine of round one. Schliesing leads the team with 12 birdies. 
 
Dylan Teeter (70-69—139) is tied for 42nd. Teeter leads the team with 26 pars. 
 
Alexandre Godin (70-70—140) is tied for 49th and freshman Connor Steichen (69-74—143) finished tied for 69th in his season debut.
 
The Miners shot 14-under on par 4 holes, the fourth best in the field. UTEP recorded 45 birdies, 107 pars and one eagle. 
 
San Jose State's Zubair Firdaus (66-63) and Kashav Mungali (63-66) topped the player leaderboard at 13-under par 129. Firdaus shot a 63 to climb six spots up the board. Cal Poly's Baron Szeto (63-67—130) is third.
