EL PASO – The Miners continue to rewrite history, boasting a 10-2 record as they concluded the UTEP Invitational with a commanding 7-1 win over North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at Helen of Troy Field. The UTEP softball team's impressive performance extended beyond this crucial victory, as they finished the tournament with an outstanding 4-1 record, securing the coveted UTEP Invitational Crown.
UTEP's Ashlynn Allen, Faith Aragon, Bri Garcia, Halle Hogan, and Lexi Morales claimed spots on the All-Tournament Team, with Aragon garnering the MVP title.
In a dramatic turn of events, UTEP overcame a scoreless deadlock through four innings against North Dakota. North Dakota initially broke the seal with a solo home run over right center field in the top of the fifth, but the Miners responded emphatically in the bottom. Amaya Lee, entering as a pinch hitter, delivered an RBI single to plate Ashlynn Allen. A throwing error during Ajia Richards' at-bat allowed Lexi Morales to steal home, giving UTEP a 2-1 lead. Two additional runs followed as an error by the UND second baseman failed to field Idalis Mendez's hit, extending the Miners' lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Halle Hogan's third-season home run sent two more runners home, securing a commanding 7-1 advantage. Zaylie Calderon took the circle to close out the game, issuing three consecutive strikeouts and Faith Aragon earned her fifth win with four strikeouts.
