UTEP Tennis Team Heads Up I-25 To Challenge Undefeated New Mexico On Sunday

2/24/2024 6:12:00 PM

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (1-7) will venture on I-25 North to lock up with undefeated New Mexico (8-0) at 11 a.m. MT Sunday. It is the lone match of the week for the Miners, who have been idle since Feb. 17.

"We have been working hard this week, preparing for a tough New Mexico team," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We are pumped up and excited for another battle."

The Orange and Blue pounced on UTRGV early by staking the doubles point in their match-up on Feb. 17 only to have the Vaqueros recover and rally for the 4-1 team triumph. UTEP has been honing its craft on the practice courts since that tilt.

Carlotta Mencaglia has set the tone for the Orange and Blue by holding down the fort at the no. 1 spot. She has registered three singles wins in the spring, including a pair at No. 1 singles. Elena Dibattista, Paloma Hennicaux and Hanna Telzynska all buoy her with a pair of triumphs in dual action.

Mencaglia and Telzynska have stolen the show in doubles play by forging a mark of 5-3 at No. 2 doubles while Veronika Lebisova and Zuzanna Szczepanska sport a mark of 2-3 at No. 1 doubles.

The Miners return to action for a two-match homestand following the contest against New Mexico. They will play host to Abilene Christian at 10 a.m. MT on March 1 before welcoming LA Tech to the Sun City for their CUSA opener at 10 a.m. on March 2. Both matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free of charge.
