ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UTEP tennis team (1-8) was knocked off at I-25 rival, No. 75 New Mexico, 6-0 on Sunday.
The Miners, who won the doubles point last time out against UTRGV on Feb. 17, aspired to do so again against the Lobos, but the home side wouldn't allow it to happen. UTEP's attempt to rally in singles play then came up short.
"We had some chances at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles but couldn't put enough good points together," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "In the singles, we really just beat ourselves. We can't seem to play consistently enough to turn this around. It's hard to beat the other team when we beat ourselves. This match today was a really tough one to swallow, but we learned a lot from this loss and will again make adjustments this week in practice to prepare for two good matches at home on Friday and Saturday."
DeCora Antoine and
Elena Dibattista showed great resolve before falling to Maud Vandeputte and Sarah O'Connor, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska were clipped at No. 2 doubles, 6-2, by Hsuan Huang and Maria Sodre. The match at No. 1 doubles went unfinished with the team point decided.
Mencaglia split the first two sets, 6-2, 3-6, vs. O'Connor at No. 1 singles before succumbing in a tie breaker, 1-0 (10-7). Telzynska was knocked off by Huang, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 2 while Dibattista was dispatched by Vandeputte, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
Zuzanna Szczepanska came up short against Leonie Hoppe, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
Paloma Hennicaux was held off by Sodre, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The match at No 2. singles went unfinished.
The Miners return to action for a two-match homestand this weekend. They will play host to Abilene Christian at 10 a.m. MT on Friday before welcoming LA Tech to the Sun City for their CUSA opener at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Both matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free of charge.
