FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The UTEP tennis team got a three-set victory from
Carlotta Mencaglia before succumbing at Northern Arizona, 6-1, on Friday.
The Miners (1-4) had a shot at the doubles point after
Zuzanna Szczepanska and
Veronika Lebisova teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, but the Lumberjacks (1-0) held on at the other courts. UTEP battled in singles, but no one else was able to join Mencaglia in the win column.
"It was another tough match for the Miners today," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We had a chance to win the doubles point but couldn't get it. In singles we battled hard but just made too many unforced errors to have a chance. Lotti played very solid and was able to adjust her game to come back and win the match after losing the first set. We have another challenge tomorrow vs Wyoming."
Mencaglia showed her meddle with at 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, come-from-behind victory against Ana Guadiana at No. 2 singles. Szczepanska and Lebisova kept their composure in a 6-4 triumph against Guadiana and Daryna Shoshyna at No. 1 doubles. The home side held serve on the other courts to deny the Miners a comeback triumph in their first road contest of the campaign.
Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska lost for the first time this spring in doubles, going down, 6-3, against Laura Duhl and Pat Niewiadomska at No. 2 doubles.
Elena Dibattista and
DeCora Antoine nearly pulled things out at No. 3 doubles vs. Dolavee Tumthong and Ava Neyestani, but they came up just shy by a final count of 7-5 (7-1).
Paloma Hennicaux was clipped by Andrea Noguera, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles while Telzynska fell by the identical score at the hands of Neyestani at No. 4 singles. Lebisova was dispatched, 6-0, 6-2, by Niewiadomska at the top position and Szczepanska was sent packing by Shoshyna, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. Dibattista was upended by Tumthong, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
UTEP will now look to recover quickly and bounce back when it faces Wyoming at 10 a.m. MT Saturday. It will be a neutral-site match-up.
