Wallis Unveils 2024 UTEP Volleyball Schedule

5/31/2024 4:00:00 PM

Season Tickets

EL PASO
– The UTEP Volleyball team is set for an exhilarating 2024 season, featuring 17 home matches at Memorial Gym. The 31-match slate includes 18 Conference USA contests and 12 non-conference affairs. UTEP will face a formidable lineup of opponents, including three league champions, three teams that competed in the 2023 NIVC, and six that appeared in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Highlighting the season, UTEP will also host the Conference USA Championship at Memorial Gym.

"We're excited to release the schedule for the 2024 slate of UTEP Volleyball because this schedule is as hard as any we've ever played in my time here as the head coach," UTEP head coach Ben Wallis said. "Our non-conference matches are tough each week and then when we get to league play, we have several NCAA top 100 teams in Conference USA, and it got even tougher this year with the addition of Kennesaw State. In each of the four non-conference tournaments we're playing at least one team, and sometimes two, that went to the NCAA tournament last year, won their conference championship, or finished second in their conference standings."

UTEP finished the 2023 season with a respectable 56 RPI. In their 2024 schedule, the Miners will face nine top-100 RPI opponents, including WKU (19), Utah State (24), Iowa State (29), SFA (39), Texas State (46), Grand Canyon (78), Southeastern Louisiana (82), New Mexico State (84), and Liberty (90).

In the 2023 season, three of UTEP's upcoming opponents distinguished themselves as conference champions: Western Kentucky (CUSA), Grand Canyon (WAC), and Southeastern Louisiana (Southland).

Season ticket holders will have first access to tickets for the Conference USA Championships, hosted by UTEP.

"Lots of good volleyball teams and lots of good teams at home in our gym (Historic Memorial)," Wallis said. "We're really proud that we led the league last year in attendance and we've already sold more season tickets at this point in the year than ever in the history of the program."

  BREAKDOWN
Non-conference
UTEP will begin the 2024 campaign with an exhibition match versus Grand Canyon, at home on Aug. 24 and will participate in four tournaments before conference play begins.

The Miners open the season at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City, Utah from Aug.30-Sept.1 and will face Utah, Green Bay, and Utah State. Last season, Utah State made an appearance in the NCAA tournament but was swept by Minnesota in the opening round.

UTEP's home opener will be its annual Borderland Invitational as the Miners welcome Air Force, Stephen F. Austin, and Southeastern Louisiana from Sept. 5-7. Last year, SEL and SFA made appearances in the NCAA tournament where both teams fell 3-0 in the opening round.

The Miners will travel to Vermillion, South Dakota to participate in the South Dakota Classic from Sept. 13-15 to take on Montana State, Iowa State, and South Dakota. All four teams made postseason appearances. Iowa State and South Dakota were knocked off in the openings rounds of the NCAA and NIVC tournaments, respectively. Montana State made a run in the NIVC defeating both Pacific and Sacrament State, 3-1, in the first two rounds and took a five-set win over Wyoming in the Great 8 before falling 3-0 to the reigning champions, Wichita State, in the semifinals.

Closing out the non-conference slate, the Miners will host the UTEP Southwest Showdown in Memorial Gym from Sept. 20-22. Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and UTRGV will join the field. Texas State was swept by SMU in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Conference USA
In the 10-member Conference USA, UTEP will play the same team twice at the same site on a weekend. The Miners will host 10 of their 18 CUSA matchups this season as league play begins Sept. 27.

Home: The Miners will have four matches in six days as they host Sam Houston (Oct. 4-5) and NM State (Oct. 8-9). UTEP will also welcome WKU (Oct. 25-26) and MTSU (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) in back-to-back weeks before closing out league play against Kennesaw State (Nov. 15-16) at Memorial Gym.

After taking the CUSA championship title, WKU swept Coastal Carolina in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, but fell 3-0 to Tennessee in round two. MTSU made an appearance in the NIVC tournament, but lost 3-1 to Ball State in the opening round.

Away: UTEP will travel to FIU (Sept. 27-28), LA Tech (Oct. 12-13), Jax State (Oct. 18-19), and Liberty (Nov. 8-9).

UTEP has been selected to host the 2024 Conference USA Championships which will be held at Memorial Gym from Nov. 22-24.

"As it stands, without the CUSA Tournament, we're hosting 17 home contests here in El Paso," Wallis said. "At the end of the year, hosting the CUSA Tournament will be a great way to wrap up the season here at home in front of a big, loud, frenetic crowd that loves volleyball."
