EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team has picked up another academic honor, being selected as an ITA All-Academic Team for the ninth straight year. Furthermore, eight different members of the team secured ITA Scholar Athlete recognition.
"I can't put into words how proud I am of this group for another amazing academic achievement," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "Year after year, they continue to impress me with their hard work and dedication on the court as well as in the classroom."
The team finished with an impressive GPA of 3.86 for the 2023-24 scholastic year, allowing UTEP to smash the minimum requirement of a 3.2 GPA. Seven of the nine student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.
It is the latest academic award for the Miners this season. UTEP previously brought home the Conference USA Women's Tennis Sport Academic award for the third straight year, which goes to the team that has the top GPA among all CUSA programs for their sport. The Miners were also recognized at the annual Golden Pick Awards for sporting the top GPA in the department for a fourth consecutive campaign.
Individually,
Veronika Lebisova became just the third CUSA women's tennis student-athlete to be voted onto the league's All-Academic team for three straight seasons. All nine members of the team landed on the CUSA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll (min. 3.0 cumulative GPA), with seven receiving the distinguished CUSA Commissioner's Academic Medal (min. 3.75 cumulative GPA). The effort helped the athletic department set school records for both the most honor roll members and medal winners.
