UTEP Tennis Impresses On Day Two Of NM State Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – A pair of victories in doubles against NM State and a 4-2 showing in singles vs. ACU all added up to a strong effort for the UTEP tennis team on the second day of the NM State Invitational on Saturday.
 
Candice Bernier, Paloma Hennicaux, Hanna Telzynska and Wendy Zhang all delivered victories in singles action while the respective pairings of Telzynska and Carlotta Mencaglia and Bernier and Zuzanna Szczepanska prevailed in doubles. The Miners are now a combined 13-5 through two days of competition of the first tournament of the fall.
 
"We played hard and with a lot of energy and the results show it," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It is really good to see them fight like this."
 
UTEP came out firing in doubles with Mencaglia and Telzynska ousting Anna Pinaieva and Dora Kurdi, 6-4. Bernier and Szczepanska held off Lisa Zhu and Montana Parkinson-Lubold, 7-6. Hennicaux and Zhang fell by a count of 6-2 against Nadia Nemeth and Whitney Moon.
 
The Orange and Blue then turned their focus to singles where they took care of business against the Wildcats. Bernier rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 triumph against Maria Cascos. Telzynska drilled Alice Klinteby, 6-2, 6-4. Hennicaux bounced Jess Board, 6-4, 7-6. Zhang also found the win column after surging past Eva Arranz, 6-2, 7-6.
 
Szczepanska was bested by Olivia Sears, 6-3, 7-6. Mencaglia came up short vs. Masha Vrsalovic, 6-3, 6-3.
 
UTEP will look to cap an outstanding weekend with the final day of the event on Sunday. Doubles commences at 9 a.m., which will be followed by singles.
