ABILENE, Texas – Paloma Hennicaux won her third match in as many days to claim a flight title in singles on the final day of competition for the UTEP tennis team at the ACU Invite Sunday.
The effort put the finishing touches on a perfect weekend of play for the native of France, who posted an undefeated (6-0; 3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) record at the tournament with flight championships in singles and doubles (Hennicaux and Valeria Carreño Torres). It marks the first since 2015 that the Orange and Blue secured both a singles and doubles flight crown at the same event.
Hennicaux crushed Chantajah Mills (Texas State) in the finals, 6-1, 6-4, to cap the dominant effort. She secured all three of her triumphs in singles via straight sets, with a combined games advantage of 36-17.
"I am really proud of how hard this team is fighting," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "This was a really tough event, and we competed very well all weekend. I really like how this team is growing and improving. We finished 14-13 for the weekend. The fact that we still came out positive is something to be really proud of."
Zuzanna Szczepanska found the win column as well with a 6-3, 6-1, vanquishing of Aoka Nagasawa (UTSA). The Miners also had three players competing for back draw titles, but each sustained a setback in a super tiebreaker.
Candice Bernier battled before succumbing, 3-6, 7-6, 10-3, against Doru Kuscu (Tartleton State).
Carlotta Mencaglia went down swinging vs. Sofia Fortuno (Texas State), 7-6, 2-6, 10-7.
Hanna Telzynska battled hard before being edged by Alice Klinetby (ACU), 1-6, 7-6, 12-10.
The Miners, who have shined in both fall tournaments, will have a chance to hone their craft before playing at the prestigious ITA Mountain Regional Championships from Oct. 17-22.
