EL PASO, Texas – On the heels of the best fall season at the school since 2009, the UTEP tennis team will turn its focus to dual play by welcoming Western New Mexico (10 a.m., Saturday) and former Conference USA rival UTSA (11 a.m. Sunday) to the Sun City this weekend. Both matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free of charge.
"We are very excited to start our season, especially because we're kicking it off at home," UTEP associate head coach
Joanna Furdyna said. "After 10 days of hard spring training, I'm confident that our team is ready for strong competition."
The Miners piled up 45 victories in the fall in singles action, with
Paloma Hennicaux (11-4) and
Hanna Telzynska (10-4) both reaching double-digit sums to set the tone. Every other Miner who competed in multiple events racked up at least five single triumphs.
UTEP was also strong in doubles, most noticeably with the play of its returning All-CUSA honoree pairing of
Carlotta Mencaglia and Telzynska. The duo rolled to a 10-4 record, which was buoyed by
Candice Bernier and
Zuzanna Szczepanska joining forces to forge a ledger of 6-4. Valeria Carreño Torres and Hennicaux looked promising when playing together as well, finishing with a 3-1 mark in limited action together.
The matches are part of a season-opening six-match homestand to begin the spring.
