Yrizar Paces Miners in Round One at Golf Iconic Classic

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UTEP women's golf team opened play at the Golf Iconic Classic on Monday with a strong showing led by freshman Blanca Yrizar, who fired a season-best 3-under 69 to finish the day tied for sixth place at the NMSU Golf Course.

Yrizar carded four birdies on the afternoon, including a steady stretch to close her round with a 1-under 35 on the back nine after posting a 2-under 34 on the front. Her performance helped pace the Miners to a team total of 289 (+1), placing them tied for 11th out of 19 teams following the opening round.

Junior Luciana Origel is tied for 32nd after posting an even-par 72, highlighted by three birdies during the opening round. Taline Kyoumjian, Atikan Cherdchoo, and Nichapas Thawinwan each carded rounds of 74 to round out UTEP's team scoring on the day.

Competing as individuals, Amelia Fridlund recorded a 1-over 73 to sit tied for 40th, while Paige Wood shot a 4-over 76 in the opening round.

The second round of the Golf Iconic Classic continues Tuesday, with the final round set for Wednesday in Las Cruces.
